A vegan diet eliminates all animal products — and the reasons people choose it are as varied as the benefits it offers. Whether motivated by ethics, the environment or personal health, those who adopt a vegan diet often find it supports healthy weight management and may offer greater protection against certain chronic diseases.
What is a vegan diet?
A vegan diet takes plant-based eating one step further than vegetarianism by removing all animal-derived products entirely. Those following a vegan diet focus on nourishing whole foods: fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, beans, nuts and seeds. Many also choose to reduce or eliminate ultra-processed foods such as refined sugars and white carbohydrates, making the diet even more beneficial for overall wellbeing.

What do vegans eat?
One of the most common misconceptions about following a vegan diet is that it leaves you hungry or feeling deprived. In reality, a well-planned vegan diet is rich, varied and deeply satisfying. Most restaurants now offer dedicated plant-based options, making it easier than ever to eat vegan wherever you are.
To give a practical example, a vegan breakfast might be a warming bowl of oatmeal topped with fresh fruit and nuts. Lunch could be a generous salad loaded with colourful vegetables and hearty beans, while dinner might feature seasoned tofu, roasted sweet potatoes, crunchy greens and slices of ripe seasonal fruit.
Examples of the types of food included in a vegan diet:
- Nuts and seeds
- Legumes
- Beans
- Whole grains
- Nut milks and nut butters
- Dried fruits and vegetables
- Fresh herbs
- Spices
- All varieties of fresh fruit and vegetables
Health benefits of eating vegan
Research suggests that a vegan diet may support heart health, assist with weight management and benefit digestive wellbeing. By shifting towards plants and away from foods high in refined sugars, saturated fats and processed carbohydrates, many people find they naturally reduce their caloric intake. A plant-based vegan diet is also associated with a healthier gut environment, thanks to its high fibre content and abundance of antioxidants and essential nutrients.
