Santosa Detox Wellness Spa Phuket Phukets Festivals

One of the great joys of visiting or living in Phuket is immersing yourself in the island’s vibrant local culture. Whilst staying with us at Santosa Detox & Wellness Center, you will have plenty of opportunities to do just that — Phuket’s festivals span the entire year, offering colourful, memorable experiences that beautifully complement your wellness journey.

February is a particularly wonderful time to visit Santosa. The weather is at its finest, the sea is calm, and the island comes alive with three iconic celebrations in quick succession: Chinese New Year, the Phuket Old Town Festival, and the Chalong Temple Fair. All three reflect the island’s rich Chinese heritage, filling the streets with glowing red lanterns, lively parades, fireworks, and the spectacle of a traditional Chinese Dragon Dance. The Chalong Temple Fair is the largest temple market on the island — a fantastic place to sample local cuisine, browse an extraordinary range of goods, and enjoy Thai cultural performances and live music.

March brings another of Phuket’s festivals that holds deep historical significance: the Thao Thepkasattri–Thao Sri Suntorn Festival, held in the north of the island. This large, family-friendly celebration honours the legendary heroines who led Phuket’s defence against the invading Burmese army, and features a wide variety of cultural events and sporting activities.

April is undeniably the hottest month across Thailand, yet it remains a rewarding time to visit Santosa for a restorative yoga retreat or detox programme. It is also the season of Songkran, Thailand’s exuberant New Year celebration. Expect joyful water fights in the streets and a festive atmosphere throughout the island. With Santosa’s close proximity to Kata Beach, you are perfectly placed to enjoy all of the fun Songkran has to offer.

June marks the beginning of Phuket’s low season — and honestly, it is one of our favourite times of year. The tropical rains nurture the lush gardens surrounding Santosa, transforming the grounds into a beautiful green sanctuary. June is also the month of Phuket’s marathon events, and in the Old Town, the enchanting Baba (Peranakan) Wedding Festival takes place. Rooted in centuries-old tradition, this mass wedding celebration features a stunning cultural parade that makes for truly memorable photographs.

July is home to the Kathu Festival, held in the charming village of Kathu. Street stalls, food vendors, live music, stage performances, and exhibitions fill the area, alongside displays and participation in traditional Thai games. If you are staying at Santosa in July, it is well worth heading over with fellow guests for an enjoyable evening out.

September sees Phuket’s Chinese heritage take centre stage once again with the Por Tor Festival, also known as the Hungry Ghost Festival. This meaningful merit-making event sees the local Thai-Chinese community pay tribute to their ancestors through offerings of food, flowers, and candles placed on altars. It is a deeply moving and culturally rich occasion that offers genuine insight into one of Phuket’s festivals with strong spiritual roots.

October is home to arguably the most famous of all Phuket’s festivals — the Phuket Vegetarian Festival — and it is one you truly should not miss. If you are considering one of our health and wellness programmes, we warmly encourage you to time your stay in October to coincide with this extraordinary event.

The Phuket Vegetarian Festival falls during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar and is rooted in the belief that abstaining from meat and other stimulants supports good health and inner peace — values that align closely with the Santosa philosophy. Celebrated at Chinese shrines across the island, the festival spans nine days and features ceremonies, vibrant street processions, and an impressive array of delicious vegetarian food.

November brings one of our most cherished of Phuket’s festivals: the serene and beautiful Loy Krathong. Celebrated near bodies of water across the island — oceans, canals, and lakes alike — this festival honours the water goddess as people release illuminated krathongs across the waterways and float lanterns into the night sky, symbolically letting go of misfortune from the year gone by. Watching the lanterns drift above Kata Beach from Santosa’s rooftop restaurant is a truly magical experience.

December brings the Christmas season and New Year celebrations — a time of reflection and gratitude here at Santosa. We mark the occasion with a specially curated vegan Christmas dinner menu and a festive New Year gathering, making it a joyful time to be part of the Santosa community.

Phuket’s festivals offer a remarkable way to connect with the island’s history, culture, and spirit — and experiencing them alongside a wellness retreat at Santosa makes your visit all the more meaningful. Invest in your health and wellbeing, and let the island’s rich calendar of celebrations enrich your stay. For more information, please fill out the enquiry form below.
