Santosa Detox Wellness Spa Phuket Mezieres Bertele Method

Santosa Detox & Wellness Center is proud to welcome back the Mezieres-Bertele Method to our detox and wellness retreat in Phuket. This is a rare and exclusive opportunity to experience this remarkable 4-hand physiotherapy technique — available nowhere else on the island.

The method was developed by Laura Bertelè, a trailblazing Italian physiotherapist who has dedicated her career to refining and evolving the Mezieres-Bertele Method into the comprehensive, whole-body approach it is today.

Who is Laura Bertelè?

Born in Italy in 1952, Laura Bertelè graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan, before going on to specialise in Physical Therapy and Motor Rehabilitation. Her thesis, titled Mézières Method: New Postural Re-Education Hypothesis, set the foundation for her life’s work. Following its completion, she joined the Orthopaedics and Traumatology department at the hospital in Cernusco sul Naviglio as a permanent assistant.

Three years later, Laura became the first and only physician to participate in a Mézières training course led by Françoise Mézières herself, held in Gers, France. Upon returning to Italy, she resigned from the hospital to begin a close collaboration with Mézières directly. By 1984, Françoise Mézières had selected Laura as a teacher at her training school, alongside French therapist Françoise Tisserand.

During this period, Laura pursued an extraordinary breadth of further study — training in psychokinetics with Professor Jean Le Boulch across France and Italy, the Tomatis Method, Chinese massage, connective massage, deep lymphatic drainage, and a range of movement disciplines including Feldenkrais, Eutonia, Antiginnastica, Rolfing, and contemporary dance.

Over the years, Laura deepened her understanding of the emotional dimension of physical tension, learning from the founders of Bioenergetics and recognising that muscles can act as a form of armour in which we store our emotions. When the muscles are gently stretched during a session, they may release these held emotions — sometimes gradually, sometimes more powerfully — allowing the body and mind to process what has long been stored. With four hands working simultaneously on the body, each session offers a unique and deeply personal journey.

To further develop her understanding of the mind-body connection, Laura undertook psycho-corporeal psychotherapy with practitioners of varying orientations, and in 1983 she joined the Order of Psychologists of Lombardy.

The result is the Mezieres-Bertele Method: an integrative approach that combines the postural techniques inherited from Mézières with a holistic view of the person as a unified body-mind-emotions system, existing within and continuously shaped by their social and family environment. Over the decades, Dr. Laura Bertelè has brought together a team of specialists united by a shared commitment to exploring the interconnections between seemingly unrelated conditions.

About the Mezieres-Bertele Method

Originating in Italy, the Mezieres-Bertele Method is built on the understanding that the human body has five key muscle chains. The primary chain runs along the back and down the back of both legs (1st), followed by the two arms (2nd and 3rd), the neck and chin (4th), and finally the muscles beneath the chest (5th).

These five muscle chains are not independent — they are deeply interconnected and constantly influence one another. Where conventional physiotherapy may focus solely on the site of pain or discomfort, the Mezieres-Bertele Method recognises that treating one chain in isolation can cause the others to compensate, often perpetuating the problem. True balance requires working across all five chains simultaneously.

The Mezieres-Bertele Method employs a distinctive 4-hand technique, allowing two therapists to work across the entire body at once, with particular attention given to the back — considered by this method to be the most important muscle chain for overall postural balance.
